During the 2015-16 school year, Anchor Bay Schools had 24% of it’s students qualify for the free and reduced lunch program. To qualify for this program, a child must be considered at-risk for food insecurity.

While these at-risk children are fed at school during the school week on the subsidized breakfast and lunch programs, what happens to these children on the weekends? Hunger doesn’t just stop on the weekends. That’s where Feed The Bay Backpack Program steps in. We want to ensure that these at-risk students have access to food over the weekend so they’ll show up at school on Mondays well nourished and ready to learn.

In the 2015-16 school year, we have provided weekend food for nearly 85 students at the school, but we know the need is greater. This year we hope to increase the number to 100-125 students. Feed The Bay Backpack Program is a 100% volunteer-run, community-supported program. Just $162 provides a student with food on the weekends for 32-weeks during the school year.

All money and food items donated to Feed The Bay stays in the Anchor Bay School District and is currently supporting students at Maconce Elementary, Lottie Schmidt Elementary, Lighthouse Elementary and Anchor Bay Middle School South. The hope is that this program will continue to expand until all qualifying students in the Anchor Bay School District have access to food each weekend through the Feed the Bay Backpack Program.
